Preparation work for new drums, bakki showers, heaters and new return pipework

To ensure all the rework to the filtration can be as smooth as possible we (Craig and I) have tried to get as much preparation work done in advance of Simon (Nippon Koi), Neil, Nemo (Tony at Koi-Kare) and Craig (Danny Koi) arriving on Monday.

The BD700 drum has arrived and we (Neil) had a quick look inside whilst it sat on the pallet. Looks like any other drum except for the customised four 4" inlets and three 4" outlets!

The next to arrive was a lorry load of pressure pipes and fittings.

4" pipework

  • 10 x 6m pipes, 10 joiners, 10 x 45' elbows, 16 x 90' swept bends, 2 x 90' elbows, 4 x equal tees and 6 ball valves

3" pipework

  • 2 x 6m pipes, 2 x plain end caps and 6 x 90' swept bends

2" pipework

  • 2 x 6m pipes, 10 joiners, 10 x 90' elbows and 10 x 45' elbows

On the Saturday, Craig managed to dig the 14m (long) x 2ft (wide) x 2ft (deep) by hand which was superb progress. The long 4" pipes will be used for two new pond returns within this trench. We put tarpaulin down next to the trench and then carefully placed the turf the right hand side, the decent soil next and then all the clay soil nearest. We plan to cement the 4" pipes in every 6ft the ensure they don't move and then have two tonnes of pea shingle to cover them. We should then be able to push the soil back and then place the turf back in place at the end of next week once all the work is done.

We then carpeted the whole of the main patio and area next to the pond so we could put four large holding vats. We could have made do with two for the koi but we wanted to save as much of the pond water as possible so went went with four.

On the Sunday morning came the point of no return. We cut a 1.2m x 1.6m hole out of the rear wall of the filter house. This went significantly better and faster then we had hoped so was all done within less than an hour. Following this we emptied the water out of the roto concept gravity showers and then disconnected them from the 4" inlets, the 2" pond outlets and 2" waste outlets.

Removing and lifting the roto showers up and through the hole in the wall was extremely tough as they are seriously heavy. After a lot of positioning and effort Craig and John with me just to hold things steady managed to get them out which was a huge relief....

Finally we boarded up the hole was it's mainly water tight for the afternoon and evening in case of rain.

We now we are ready for the major work to start with everyone here on Monday (tomorrow) morning.
